When you are shopping for toys for children, there are hundreds of selections that you can choose from. Building and marketing toys is big business, after all, and manufacturers are always on the look out for the next hit with the younger crowd. Even so, classic choices like ride on toys are still very popular with kids. Why are these so popular and what are some of the things that you need to keep in mind when shopping for a ride on toy?

Kids love to be doing things, getting involved with activities and participating. Unlike adults, or even older children, who are often content to be engaging in activity that keeps them fairly sedentary, kids want to be moving. The more activity is happening, the better they feel. Kids are designed to learn through motion and experience. They also like to model the things that they see adults doing in their everyday lives. Ride on toys speak to both of these priorities and allow for a free expression for children as they play.

When you choose a ride on toy for your child, you need to pay attention to the manufacturer’s recommendation. Toys usually have a designated age range that is given for each particular design. Study and research goes into designating the most appropriate age range for each ride on toy, so pay attention to this information while shopping.

Both physical and emotional maturity may be used to make the assessment as to the most appropriate age for the toy. Even if your child is big for their age, they may not have the physical capability to operate the ride on toy as safely as necessary. Be sure that you purchase the most appropriate ride on toy for their developmental capabilities.

Once you have determined the best ride on toy for your child, you need to take steps to ensure that all safety protocols are in place. Just like a bicycle, it is advised that your child wear a helmet and protective padding when operating a ride on toy. If the toy is motorised, this is even more important. If an accident happens at higher speeds, more damage is possible. It’s also a good idea to walk your child through the safe and correct operation of the toy before allowing them to play alone. Supervise them during the months when the toy is new, and until you are comfortable that they understand the safety rules that are in place.

Ride on toys are very popular with young children. If your toddler is too young to learn to ride a bike, they may enjoy operating a manual ride on toy. These are often made to look like cars and animals, and are operated by the child pushing the toy with their own feet. This is a safe alternative to a motorised toy for a young child. Older children appreciate ride on toys that are motorized. Be sure that you know what the power and performance issues are. A new rider may be better suited for a model that operates at slower speeds.

Kids love to be on the go. Ride on toys offer them the chance to experience the magic of motion, without risking their safety too much. Motorised ride on toys are enjoyed by both younger and older children. As a parent, provide proper supervision and be sure that you have safety procedures in place, so that your children can get as much enjoyment out of this popular toy, while you retain your own peace of mind.

This is the stage in your child’s life where his play becomes goal oriented. Your focus should be on baby developmental toys that will allow your child to explore and experiment while at the same time give him a sense of independence.

Your child is gaining a better sense of balance and enjoys improving his fine motor skills. At this time, treasure hunts become ideal for your child because they promote movement (standing, squatting, walking). Some of the greatest baby developmental toys for this age also include classic hands on toys like a pail and shovel or water toys.

Your baby will continue to look at blocks in different ways as he will begin building other things besides just towers and maybe be selective in what colors and shapes he chooses.

This is the stage where your child might start trying to dress himself or his teddy. Part of making your house more kid friendly includes making him more responsible. At this age your child will also begin imitating a lot of your everyday actions. Letting them help in the kitchen or with house chores may not help much with the cleaning, but it will increase his self confidence.

Push toys or riding toys such as tricycles are great baby developmental toys because they expand your child’s world and stimulating his imagination. Now he has the option of “riding off into the sunset” and discovering new lands or simply “drive down” and get a pizza for him and teddy.

As an added bonus, baby developmental toys such as push or riding toys usually include some kind of storage compartment. This stimulates your child’s independence by allowing him to choose what he wants to carry along and what gets left behind. It also allows him to set up camp wherever he pleases as he has his essentials with him. The great thing about these baby developmental toys is that when he chooses to move on, he will have to pack up his gear, thereby learning to clean up after himself.

Beyond a doubt, the best learning toys for babies are objects that they will be attracted to, want to touch and explore, and are safe for little hands and mouths.

Babies are pretty easy to please, but there are things to look for that will not only keep your baby occupied with exploring; teach them a bit about the world at the same time. Here are some things to look for when buying your baby their first toys.

—Non-toxic, safe materials. Babies love to explore and one of the ways the youngest does this is by putting everything in their mouths. As adults, we are sometimes horrified by the items we have to pull from their grasps, but it’s just a baby’s way of learning. So if they’re going to be stuffing things in, make certain you pay attention to age limits, even if you think your baby is “advanced.” Large objects made with non-toxic materials from reputable toy companies are always a safe bet. Don’t be discouraged if your baby puts the blocks in their mouths instead of building the Sydney Opera House.

—Pay attention to age limits. Age limits are put on toys for several reasons, both cognitive and for safety. They have been developed over time based on case studies and research, so it’s best not to second guess them. Babies won’t learn if they are bored or frustrated with a toy that isn’t suited to them, and the last thing any parent needs is a visit to the hospital.

—Simple is sometimes better. For small babies, who are just learning to grasp and understand cause and effect, simple toys are sometimes the best. Blocks and caterpillar toys can be just as fascinating as other, expensive toys.

Experienced parents learn pretty quickly the frustration of spending a lot of money on toys that don’t do much more than collect dust.

—Don’t buy used toys. As tempting as it is in this economy, try not to buy used toys. They may have broken or missing parts and may have toxic chemicals. The best baby learning toys aren’t necessarily the most expensive ones, but one that will engage your baby.

—Texture, color, shape. Babies love the feel of different textures, colors and shapes. They love to touch, and touching for a baby is learning. Buy learning toys that allow babies to explore the world’s different shapes and textures safely.

Buying babies toys can be a hit or miss proposition. What engages one baby will leave another completely uninterested. So don’t worry if your little one ignores their toys at first, they likely gain interest later.

Plastic toys cannot compare to the natural beauty wooden toys bring to the party. This is why despite being thousands of years old and having to compete with more sophisticated toys, they still survive as popular toys today. They are simple and elegant and have a quality feel to them, so end up being passed onto to younger siblings as well as future generations.

Early toys, being those made about 4,000 years ago, were mostly made from wood. Small carved pieces of wood were used in games similar to chess and larger models of horses and chariots were used as role play toys by Roman children. The first jigsaw puzzle was also wooden, having been invented by a mapmaker called John Spilsbury, to help with teaching geography. In the Middle Ages, wooden puppets saw work being used in street shows for children. Victorian times saw the advent of wooden doll houses which were very elaborate and costly. And after the First World War, wooden models of aeroplanes and other vehicles became popular.

Nowadays with society being more environmentally aware, wooden toys are receiving renewed interest. They are made from a sustainable and renewable source, generally do not require batteries and can be recycled easily. You can find locally made hand crafted wooden toys which saves the environment from transport fumes and also supports your local community.

Wooden toys are a lot safer for our children too. Plastic toys can release toxins if they are chewed by younger children but wood is germ-free. They also encourage more creative thinking in our children by being adaptable to so many different games. They are not a single purpose toy that limits imagination and encourages a short attention span. They are available for all age groups in a huge range of toys, from shape sorters, to building blocks, to model craft kits. Most are educational in nature allowing your child to develop their motor skills or problem solving skills through fun play.

As with everything in life, there are always those people who are trying to circumvent the proper procedures for making safe and environmentally friendly toys. So do not just assume that because a toy is wooden it has been manufactured appropriately. The wood may have been acquired illegally or the paint may be toxic. Buy from reputable manufacturers who use FSC-certified wood and water-based paints.

Children learn through play and the toys they use during this play time shape they way they perceive the world. Many toys mimic real life such as play kitchens, houses and vehicles so children can learn skills and how to function in society through a fun medium. As such you need to provide your children with the right sort of toys that encourage independent thought and creativity whilst honing their skills of movement, logic and problem solving. Buying toys that are eco friendly and explaining this to them will encourage them to live by these values as adults.

When your baby is first born, everything is new to them. They are already wired to begin learning as a means of survival. The best way to stimulate this natural instinct is with the right baby developmental toys.

The right baby developmental toys must stimulate your baby’s natural growing stage. Self awareness will reveal to him his body, arms, feet, etc. To help him develop hand-eye coordination baby gyms or mobiles are great since they will stimulate the muscles used for reaching, grasping turning over and sitting up with no support.

Your baby will spend the first six months of his life testing out his sensory and motor skills. Of his five senses, sight is the least developed while touch is keenest. You search for the right baby developmental toys should therefore include toys such as wooden picture books that incorporate different textures.

Your child will begin to recognize and sort out all of the sounds that were once muffled. By the time they are six months old, your child can recognize his own name and recognize the direction of sound. A mobile that incorporates both texture and sounds is best as it will not only stimulate his senses of touch and sound, but also be an early introduction of cause and effect.

To stimulate his vision, you are looking for baby developmental toys that are brightly colored as he will show a preference for 2-toned objects as well as contrasting colors. The colors he can distinguish best are white, black and red. He will also be most interested in faces, so the most appropriate baby developmental toys would be a baby safe mirror or something that forms accurate reflections.

For extra safety make sure none of the toys have string, lead or small objects like buttons that can easily become chocking hazards as he begins mouthing.

By Bobby Jenkins

Dinosaurs are more often than not depicted as big, scary-looking creatures with huge jaws, sharp teeth and a thunderous roar. Almost all movies and shows and toys equate these creatures to monstrosity. That did not make it any less appealing to kids. They absolutely love playing and imagining being in a land filled with the huge, scary dinosaurs.

But then in 1987, Barney was born. A cute and cuddly purple and green dinosaur who loves eating peanut butter and jelly sandwiches. And milk. It doesn’t come as a surprise why kids get attracted to such an endearing and sweet character.

The real sweet deal is aside from kids being able to watch Barney on television; Barney toys are now available in all leading toy stores, in all parts of the world.

The Barney toys range from big plush stuffed toys to little miniature Barneys that are equally soft and plush, ready to be loved and cuddled by newborns. Some of them can even laugh and talk and sing at the push of a button.

The Barney and Friends toys have become so successful that apart from the plush stuffed toys, there are even Barney online games now.

Kids just absolutely adore their Barney toys. Someone as young as a two-year-old already has the sense of being completely adamant by deciding she won’t sleep without her Barney toy beside her.

It makes you wonder what these kids see in their Barney toys… how come they absolutely adore them. How come they can’t put them down? How come after they’ve outgrown stuffed toys, they still have to go through playing online games involving the purple dinosaur?

But then again, if kids can actually fall in love with the real scary-looking dinosaurs that bite and roar and frighten everyone, then I can absolutely understand and even support that they adore the sandwich-fruits-and-vegetables-eating purple and green creature, who can sing and laugh and make all things cuddly and happy.

There are a lot of baby toys on the market today. Many of them are large enough to fill up most of your living room. Some come with claims such as “increases fine motor skills” or the more dubious “raises your child’s I.Q.” Most importantly, you want to find something that your child will enjoy playing with. Toys are fun for infants starting at about 5 or 6 months old. Younger infants don’t really play with toys. Your child will begin to enjoy toys once he has learned how to grab and release objects, and can sit unassisted. Here are some classic toys that never go out of style.

1. Stacking cups. This is a toy your child will return to again and again over a period of years. Babies like to pick up the cups, or put things inside and take them out again. Toddlers will actually use them to make a stack, and will learn how to fit them inside each other in the right order. Stacking cups are also lots of fun as a bath toy, because babies and toddlers love pouring water.

2. Stacking rings. This is another classic stacking toy that consists of a series of coloured rings that fit over a central pole. Babies like playing with the. They will chew on them, throw them, or wear them around their arms. As your baby graduates to toddlerhood, he will begin to try to put the rings on in the right order.

3. Teethers. There are a lot of teething toys available. When you choose one, you are looking for something that is just a little bit sqiushy. Some teethers are filled with water so you can chill them in the fridge before letting baby chew on them. Don’t chill them in the freezer – you don’t want your baby to get frostbite! Avoid teething toys that are covered on lots of small raised bumps or other patterns, since these can actually cut your baby’s gums. One great teething toy is the ever popular “Sophie the Giraffe”, which is a squeaky rubber giraffe.

4. Beach ball. Balls are great toys. Babies that can’t yet throw them yet love to roll them on the floor. A beach ball is a good toy, because if it is slightly deflated, a baby can grab it and hang on more easily. When buying balls for infants, make sure that they are large enough not to be a choking hazard.

5. Shape sorter. There are many types of these available as well. They are best for babies over a year old, since they are capable of figuring out which shapes go in which holes. It’s just as fun to dump the shapes out as it is to put them in!

The simplest type of kids construction toys must surely be a set of wooden building blocks. However, they are limited in what they can achieve, though they can fascinate the very young. A jigsaw could also be considered a toy that has to be constructed, but once completed, there isn’t much more to do, other than admire the picture. A better idea for toys that require building and construction is one that has nuts and bolts with pieces of differing shapes that can be joined together in meaningful ways to create something functional.

Hmm… Sounds a lot like Meccano!

Meccano is a giant in the business of kids construction toys. They have been producing these distinctive types of construction sets since 1901. Generations of boys were reared on a toy that consisted of nuts, bolts and screws that could join metal pieces together through pre-drilled holes to construct a crane, a car or a plane, or just something that looked good, but didn’t really have an obvious purpose. Being creative and designing in new and innovative ways is one of the hallmarks of this revolutionary toy that has constantly been among the bestsellers for generations.

Older “boys” will remember the sets in red and green and all metal. Younger boys will know that all colours and plastic too is now a common element of the toy. One thing hasn’t changed though, and that’s quality. From strips, girders and brackets, to cylindrical parts, multikit parts and electrical parts, the quality is rigidly maintained at a very high standard indeed. No matter how clumsy little fingers are with tools; trying to tighten a nut with a spanner, or insert a screwed rod, the parts are built to endure the wear and tear, and built to last too.

Traditionally, Meccano was for the older child who could manage all the little fiddly bits, but now much younger children can enjoy the toy too. A pre-school line exists that makes it easy and extremely satisfying for very young kids to have all of the fun that older ones have always enjoyed. Problem solving is now easy and fun for tiny tots who feel that construction with creative designing is something they would like to try out.

Kids construction toys have certainly come a long way over the past 100 years and more. Meccano, far from being something your father or grandfather played with once upon a time, is a classic and timeless brand that is more than suitable for today’s 21st century child.

Discover educational fun construction toys as they are meant to be. Come back to before electronic gadgetry took over, and to when constructing things gave real pleasure. Discover Meccano models all over again and be so glad you did!

Ride on toys for toddlers are great toys that will increase motor skills, burn off excess energy, and stimulate imaginations. Toddlers are beginning to really explore their environments at this age and as parents it is our responsibility to encourage this development. Introducing ride on toys is the perfect way to do this.

Toddlers are really at a stage where they are increasing their motor skills. Ride on toys for toddlers will increase your child’s gross motor skills by working their muscle groups through the physical exercise that they’ll get with this type of toy. They will also increase the fine motor skills through the hand to eye coordination that occurs from playing with the extra features like buttons and switches of a ride on toy.

Your toddler is also at an age where they are very stimulated by pretend play and imitation. You have probably already noticed that your kids may be engaging in pretend play and imitating things what other people around them are doing. These skills are reinforced with ride on toys and will help develop these skills.

There are so many different ride on toys for toddlers to choose from that it can sometimes be difficult to choose. The following are 3 of the most developmentally stimulating toy groups to choose from:

Push Ride On Toys For Toddlers

If your child is just learning to walk or is just beginning to pull themselves up on things, than push ride on toys are the perfect toy. These toys are wonderful because your child can either stand up behind the toy and push them, or the can sit on them and ride them by pushing with their legs.

Both of these movements work the large muscle groups and may even help your child walk faster. The dashboards on these ride on toys are generally very interactive for fine motor skill development. They may have buttons to push, lights that flash, or horns to blow.

Little Tikes Ride On Cars

The Little Tikes Ride On Cars are wonderful ride on toys for toddlers. They are great for stimulating imaginations as your child takes all of the sights, sounds, and smells of their environment. These cars come in a variety of colors and designs.

They all have removable floorboards. You can leave them in for younger children so you can just push them around and then remove them when they’re ready to ride on their own. These cars are adorable and so much fun for kids this age.

Radio Flyer Bikes

Bikes are the perfect way for your kids to get some great exercise and Radio Flyer makes the best tricycles for toddlers that you’ll be able to find. They have a great variety and they are so durable that they’ll last for years and years.

With a tricycle, your toddlers will become more independent and develop more self confidence. They’ll become more coordinated and increase their balance. Every child grows up with a bike and there’s no better time to start then when they’re toddlers. Tricycles are great ride on toys for toddlers.

Push ride on toys, Radio Flyer bikes, and the Little Tikes Ride On Cars are wonderful examples of ride on toys that are beneficial for toddlers.
